The RBI raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50 per cent on 7 October 2026. The vote was unanimous. It is the first hike since February 2023. The stance moved from neutral to calibrated tightening. For a borrower, this is not market noise. It changes the price of floating loans and the rate your credit file will be tested at.

This decoder keeps it simple. What changed, who feels it first, and what to do in your file. Numbers below are from the RBI decision of 7 October, cross checked across the RBI press release listing and independent reporting. Analyst views are labelled as analyst views. They are not RBI guidance.

What changed on 7 October?

The Monetary Policy Committee met from 5 to 7 October 2026 and announced its decision on 7 October.

  • Repo rate: 5.25 per cent to 5.50 per cent, up 25 basis points. Vote 6 to 0.
  • Standing Deposit Facility rate: 5.25 per cent.
  • Marginal Standing Facility rate and Bank Rate: 5.75 per cent.
  • Stance: neutral to calibrated tightening. Stance vote 4 to 2.
  • FY27 CPI forecast: raised to 5.2 per cent from 5.0 per cent.
  • FY27 GDP forecast: raised to 7.1 per cent from 6.7 per cent.
  • August CPI: 4.82 per cent year on year, the third month above the 4 per cent target.

The RBI said inflation is no longer benign. Price rises have broadened beyond a few items. Nearly half the consumer basket now sits above 4 per cent. Higher crude, a weak monsoon linked to El Nino, and firm growth gave the committee room to act. Q1 FY27 GDP grew 7.8 per cent. Growth did not need support. Inflation needed a response.

Who does this affect first?

Borrowers on floating rates feel it first. Repo linked loans reprice at the next reset date. Working capital moves before term loans because the interest is charged monthly on use.

CAs and DSAs feel it in live files. Projections built at 5.25 per cent pricing now look light. Margins, interest cost and debt service need a fresh run before the file reaches committee.

Credit officers feel it in appraisal. Sanctions under review will be tested at the new price, not the price in your first draft. Expect questions on rate headroom, not just on last year profit.

What does this mean for your credit file?

Start with the direct cost. Take Rs 10 crore of floating working capital. Add 25 basis points. The extra interest is about Rs 2.5 lakh a year. The maths is simple: Rs 10,00,00,000 times 0.25 per cent. If you use only part of the limit, the cost falls on the used amount. The point is not the size. The point is that every floating file now carries a higher base price.

Next, test debt service. Your debt service coverage ratio must hold at the new rate. Add term loan interest and instalments. Add working capital interest at 5.50 per cent repo linked pricing. If your DSCR was tight at 5.25 per cent, it is tighter now. A small fall can push you below your bank floor. Officers will run this stress even if your projections do not. Run it first.

Then, fix the narrative in your credit appraisal memorandum. Do not leave old rate assumptions in the file. Update the interest line. Update cash flow. Note the reset date for each facility. If your loan is MCLR linked, say so. MCLR loans move slower. Repo linked loans move at reset. A clear note saves a query cycle.

Finally, check conduct. Higher rates expose weak account conduct fast. Late stock statements, excess drawings and cheque returns read worse when money is dearer. Our guide on what credit officers look for in bank statements shows the exact lines officers scan. Clean that record before renewal. In a tightening cycle, a clean statement is cheap headroom.

One planning rule follows from the stance. Calibrated tightening means cuts are off the table for now. Do not pencil in lower rates for FY28 projections. Build your base case at current pricing. Treat any future cut as upside, not as plan.

What should you watch next?

The next MPC meeting is 2 to 4 December 2026. The decision falls on 4 December. The RBI published this schedule in March 2026. Between now and then, watch two prints: September and October CPI. Watch crude. Watch whether price rises keep spreading to core items. Those three decide if December is a pause or another hike.

Analyst views, not RBI guidance: several houses see more tightening ahead. Kotak expects a 25 basis point hike in December if inflation stays broad. Elara sees scope for another 50 basis points in this cycle. Bank of Baroda research has outlined a path toward 6.00 per cent repo across December, February and early next year. Treat these as market views. The RBI has not guided to 6.00 per cent. It has guided to data.

For your file, the watch list is practical. Note your next reset date. Keep one rate stress case ready. Keep your bank statement clean. If you have a sanction under process, ask your banker which price the appraisal now uses. That one question prevents a late surprise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my loan rate go up after this RBI hike?

If your loan is linked to the repo rate, your rate resets higher at the next reset date. The reset gap depends on your sanction terms. MCLR linked loans move slower and often by less. Check your sanction letter for the benchmark, the spread and the reset month before you assume the new cost.

What does calibrated tightening mean in plain words?

It means rate cuts are off the table for now. The next move, if any, is a hike or a pause. It is not a promise of more hikes. The RBI said the path will depend on inflation, growth and how price pressures spread. For planning, do not build rate cuts into FY28 projections.

How much extra will a Rs 10 crore working capital loan cost?

At plus 25 basis points, the extra interest is about Rs 2.5 lakh a year on a Rs 10 crore floating balance. The maths is Rs 10,00,00,000 times 0.25 per cent. If your limit is partly unused, the cost falls on the used amount only.

Should I stress test my DSCR after this hike?

Yes. Recompute debt service at the new repo linked price, not the old 5.25 per cent world. Include term loan interest, instalments and working capital interest at the higher rate. If DSCR falls close to your bank floor, fix cash flow or tenor before the officer does it for you.

When is the next RBI MPC meeting?

The next meeting is scheduled for 2 to 4 December 2026, with the decision on 4 December. The RBI published this schedule in March 2026. Between now and then, watch the September and October CPI prints, crude prices and whether price rises keep broadening beyond food and fuel.
